Tools & Materials
Overview
Every tool in ReInDev is built from a tool material that defines four numbers: harvest level (what it can mine), max uses (durability), mining efficiency, and bonus melee damage. Each tool type adds a fixed base damage on top of the material's bonus. Five tool types exist (PICKAXE, AXE, SHOVEL, SWORD, HOE), plus the Frying Pan. Unlike vanilla Beta 1.7.3, several materials carry built-in special abilities instead of relying on enchantments.
Tool Materials
Values below are the raw material definitions used by the game (harvest level / durability / efficiency / damage-vs-entity).
| Material | Harvest Lvl | Durability | Efficiency | Dmg bonus | Special ability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | 0 | 64 | 2.0 | +0 | — |
| Stone | 1 | 128 | 4.0 | +1 | Fortune |
| Iron | 2 | 256 | 6.0 | +2 | — |
| Gold | 2 | 384 | 12.0 | +2 | Silk Touch |
| Diamond | 3 | 1536 | 8.0 | +3 | Haste Over Time |
| Molten (Fire) | 2 | 256 | 6.0 | +1 | Smelt Touch, sets target on fire |
| Obsidian | 2 | 16384 | 6.0 | +2 | — |
| Corundum (Frying Pan) | 2 | 512 | 6.0 | +2 | Knockback & kickback |
Note that Gold is far more efficient (12.0) but very fragile, and Obsidian has by far the highest durability (16,384) yet only an iron-level harvest level. Augmentite exists in the mod as a crafting/cosmetic material (Augmentite Shades, Augmentite Pig Armor) but has no tool set — there is no augmentite pickaxe, sword, etc.
Harvest Levels & Gating
A tool can break a block for drops only if its harvest level meets or exceeds the block's minimum harvest level and the tool type matches. Harvest tiers are: 0 = anything (wood), 1 = stone, 2 = iron, 3 = diamond.
- Level 1+ (Stone): Iron Ore, Iron Block, Lapis Block.
- Level 2+ (Iron): Gold Ore/Block, Diamond Ore/Block, and the Nether ore variants.
- Level 3 (Diamond): Obsidian Slabs (the highest-gated material in the data).
Because Molten and Obsidian tools sit at harvest level 2 (iron-equivalent), only the Diamond Pickaxe reaches harvest level 3.
Mining Speed
A tool mines at its material efficiency against the correct block type, and at 1.0 otherwise. The Diamond Pickaxe is special: its effective speed scales with wear via the factor maxDamage / (maxDamage − itemDamage) — this is the "Haste Over Time" ability, so a worn diamond pickaxe mines faster than a fresh one, and it always mines Obsidian at full efficiency.
Combat Damage
Melee damage is the tool type's base plus the material bonus. Base values: Pickaxe +2, Axe +3, Shovel +1, Hoe +1. Swords use 3 + 2×(material bonus). For example a Diamond Sword deals 3 + 2×3 = 9, an Obsidian Sword deals 7, and the Frying Pan deals 7 while launching the target (and recoiling the wielder). Molten tools add Fire Damage and ignite the target for ~10 seconds; the (unused-in-tools) Ice material would add Frost Damage.
Special Tool Abilities
Abilities are tied to the material and shown on the tooltip as "Ability: …". They alter what a block drops when broken with that tool:
- Fortune (Stone tools): increases yields. Coal Ore drops 1–2 coal; Gravel rolls extra Flint, Gunpowder, or Bone instead of a plain gravel block.
- Silk Touch (Gold tools): drops the block itself rather than its product. Stone drops Stone (not Cobblestone), Coal Ore drops the ore block, Diamond Ore drops the ore block, and Gravel drops Gravel.
- Smelt Touch (Molten tools): drops the smelted form on break. Stone yields Polished Stone, and metal ores drop their ingot directly. (Implemented per-block; e.g. the Molten Pickaxe auto-smelts metal ores.)
- Haste Over Time (Diamond tools): the durability-scaled mining speed described above.
Obtaining Tools
- Wood→Diamond & Gold: crafted from sticks plus the matching material in the standard tool patterns. Crafting your first pickaxe grants the Time to Mine! achievement.
- Molten: crafted shapelessly by combining an existing Iron tool with a Lava Bucket (e.g. Iron Pickaxe + Lava Bucket → Molten Pickaxe). Grants Melting Point.
- Obsidian & Frying Pan: present in the game with full stats but have no standard crafting recipe in the data — treat them as special/obtained items.
Material-tier upgrades also trip achievements: Getting an Upgrade (first Stone tool), Touch of Gold (Gold tool), and Keeps Getting Better (Diamond tool).
